While working my internship at the Joliet Slammer Stadium or I should I say DuPage Medical Group Field. My involvement with the Slammers made me able to over see the entire facility. While over seeing the facility, I was witnessing areas of potential risk and hazards. Which lead to me to my idea for my project.
Throughout my days working my internship. I heard none the less about how the organization needs to extend the netting on the baseball field. This is a number one risk for the Slammers because throughout the season multiple fans were wounded by foul balls. The netting only reaches till the end of the dugouts on each side. Leaving three seating sections expose to foul balls. Extending the netting on each side would take a chunk out of the budget for the Slammers. The price could be estimated to about $15,000.
There are two hills on each side of the stadium where fans are allowed to hangout and watch the baseball game. These areas are usually filled mostly with kids. These kids can be found unsupervised most of the time as well. This is potential risk because children don't know how steep this hill actually is. Along with that there is a sewer top almost at the bottom of the hill that is covered up with a caution sign. This could easily be removed and could result in danger for kids. This area should be more supervised by Slammer employees to lower the risk of injuries.
Easily seen in this photo is a drop off of four feet right next to the playground. This high risk for children because the usually don't know their surroundings that well and can fall over this ledge. There should be put a fence around this drop off to lower the chances of kids falling and injuring themselves.
The playground is a good asset for the Slammers because it gives the opportunity for adults to bring their children. This also gives adults the opportunity of freedom and little bit of peace and quite. Unfortunately, there won't be much of that because the playground is filled with mulch and wood chips. I can speak on this from first hand experience. Falling on would chips could result in bad injuries like scrapes on the body or possibly wood chips in the eye. The Slammers need to recognize this risk and replace the wood chips with rubber. This will lower the risks of injuries.
Like I stated in the other risk about the hill. There are two areas where fans can lay and hangout and watch the game. With doing that though you have to watch out for drop off like this one in the photo. Every game you get kids that are wild and crazy and run around. Any one could easily miss this drop off and slip and fall down the hill. This is a high risk and should be dealt with as soon as possible. The Slammers need to put down concrete or fresh grass that takes up this drop off.
This is clearly a high risk and shouldn't even be on this list. This is an open power transformer that is located at the end side of the field. This area is open to anyone which is a terrible and hazardous risk. This could easily be messed around with by kids who come to the ball games. This area needs to fence up and put out of harms way.
